google search engine market share

Google increased its search engine market share by .3% over December 2011 to continue its reign as the #1 search engine, both globally and in the U.S. Yahoo! continued its slide into 3rd rank; while displaced by Google, Microsoft and the Ask Network. Yahoo! was the only search engine to lose market share in January 2012.

Last month Bing displaced Yahoo! as the 2nd most popular U.S. search engine. In January 2011, Yahoo’s U.S. market share was 16%. These metrics are calcualted by ComScore for explicit core searches, meaning searches manually entered via their Web page.

There were 17.8 billion explicit searches in January 2012, 11.8 billion belonging to Google. With Google’s new privacy policy on the horizon it will be interesting to see if this trend continues or if Microsoft will disrupt Google’s growth.

Below are the overall month over month search engine market shares from ComScore.
